Building and pest inspections in Goodna
Goodna was one of the hardest-hit suburbs in the 2011 flood: the Queensland Reconstruction Authority's August 2011 audit recorded 83 homes destroyed and 74 severely damaged, and its June 2022 audit recorded 85 severely damaged after the 2022 flood. Check council's historical flood mapping for the address and get flood insurance quoted before your contract deadline.
Answer first: Goodna's flood record
Goodna is about 13 km east of the Ipswich CBD, on the Brisbane River. It was one of the hardest-hit suburbs in the 2011 flood. The Queensland Reconstruction Authority's August 2011 damage audit recorded:
- 83 Goodna homes destroyed
- 74 with severe damage
- 93 with moderate damage
- 96 with minor damage
After the February to April 2022 flood, its June 2022 audit recorded 85 Goodna homes with severe damage and 45 with moderate damage. Goodna homes were among the first bought back under the QRA's Resilient Homes Fund, and a QRA case study describes a high-set house in Enid Street where the 2022 water rose halfway up the second level.
The Bureau of Meteorology notes that flooding around Ipswich can also come from Brisbane River backwater, and from small local creeks, including Woogaroo Creek, which rise very quickly in heavy rain.
Checks before you buy
- Use council's historical flood mapping tool for the address. It shows the 1974 and 2011 extents and the 2022 flood levels.
- Ask whether the house was bought back, raised or repaired under a flood program, and get the paperwork.
- Ask the inspector to report on flood repairs, damp, staining and the condition of stumps, posts and lower-level framing.
- Get an insurance quote that includes flood cover before your contract deadline.
Mines and housing
Mapped underground workings cover about 10% of Goodna, including the Goodna mines and part of the Westfalen No. 3 Colliery, the mine behind the subsidence in neighbouring Collingwood Park.
In the 2021 Census, 82.4% of occupied dwellings were separate houses and 16.3% were semi-detached houses, townhouses or units. Ipswich City Council has named Goodna among the areas where Ipswich City Plan 2025 allows more housing density.
